A unique collaboration
Matsew is the brand founded by leather craftsman Satoshi Matsukawa in 2018. The brand is characterized by its use of high-quality materials and soft looks.
Matsukawa usually makes products on order, agreeing with KiGinKin to create a few pieces for the international public.
Matsukawa started his brand with the desire to 'make goods that look simple', by designing bags and other accessories that hide the extreme care he puts into making them. Matsew produces a large number of accessories this way: wallets, keyholders, cardholders and more. KiGinKin features Matsew's bags, such as the Shoulder bag and the Classic trainer.
The simple looks are achieved by the artisan's use of high-quality simple materials such as leather and canvas, combining them with vintage-feel colors and unplated metals for the hard parts. Most notably, the craftsman aims to always create a soft-looking design with a warm vintage feel.
Matsew makes use of carefully selected materials. This is the complete list.
Leather: Exclusively from Tuscany, in Italy, only made using vegetable tannins.
Canvas: From the city of Kurashiki, in Japan.
Duck canvas: Made using the same raw materials and techniques as the original duck canvas produced in 1870.
Army duck: Similar to duck canvas, made using thinner threads that give a softer feel.
CORDURA® fabric: The 70% cotton / 30% nylon type. Compared to the all-nylon type, this fabric looks and feels more natural while preserving its ripstop properties.
Metal parts: Made in brass or copper.
Fasteners: Unplated red copper. The black color of some fasteners is obtained through chemical coloring.
Born in Kyoto, Satoshi Matsukawa learnt about the art of leather crafting in Saitama for 14 years.
