Dyeing technique

Bassen (抜染) is a dyeing technique, which is referred to as "discharge dyeing" in English.
Bassen dyeing is where bleach or other discharge agents are applied to areas of a fabric to remove the original color.

The technique is often applied to fabric previously dyed in a characteristic color, indigo blue, to obtain the classic design

Careful application of the discharging agent and the expertise of artisans allow the creation of highly complex patterns, sometimes easily mistaken for itome yūzen.
